JAW PAIN

Your temporomandibular joint, or TMJ, is formed where your jawbone connects to the temporal bone of your skull. The TMJ enables you to talk, chew, yawn, sing and open and close your mouth. Sometimes the TMJ becomes painful, and it may even freeze up, making it difficult to open and move your mouth.
Symptoms of TMJ Disorders.

Common symptoms of TMJ dysfunction include:

  • Pain in the jaw, face or mouth
  • Pain or tenderness in the TMJ on one or both sides of the mouth
  • Pain in or around the ear
  • Pain when chewing
  • Clicking or popping sounds in the jaw
  • Freezing or locking of the jaw
  • Headache
  • Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)

Jaw Pain Causes

In most cases, TMJ disorders arise from overuse, where the muscles that move the jaw become fatigued or tight from chewing or stress. However, poor posture or excessive use of electronic devices can create misalignments in the upper body that affect TMJ function.
Common causes of TMJ pain include:

  • Trauma
  • Arthritis
  • Stress
  • Teeth grinding or clenching
  • Damage to cartilage or connective tissue
  • Poor upper body posture
  • Erosion or misalignment of the TMJ disc
